The Carbon Footprint of Pets
I recently glanced at an online article talking about how dogs leave a huge carbon footprint on the Earth… that the manufacturing plants that process the dog food pollute the atmosphere more than an SUV. In addition, it stated that the fecal matter of dogs pollutes our environment. (Gee, I wonder how big the carbon footprint is from the manufacturing plants that refine baby food and the like produce. Anyway how can you compare one vehicle to a large building 50 times the size of an SUV.)
I have a problem with this on so many levels. First, you cannot compare a carbon based life form that has emotions and brings joy to their humans to a two tons piece of metal and plastic parts. I would sooner stop driving my car than give up my dogs. They have brought me countless hours of joy and happiness. They are the exercise buddy that never says no to a walk or outing.
They never give you shit about anything other than maybe wanting to play…or to bug you to get you out of your funk.
If the carbon footprint is so big from the processing plants that manufacture the food, maybe we need some engineers to brainstorm and show the plants a better way to make the dog food. That will solve both problems of the factories and the poop. So many dog food brands are loaded with unnecessary fillers that make the waste matter (poop) larger and fillers are no good for the dog’s health anyway.
What about all the animals in the wilderness that relieve themselves in the woods? I am sure the streams get contaminated from all the excrement. What are we going to do, get rid of everything that harms the Earth. Good luck with that.
All we can do is our best and to make a difference ourselves by getting good dog food that has little or no fillers, pick up the poop, and drive smaller fuel efficient vehicles.
We have gotten lazy and need to work harder and be more aware of the things with do.
