Fashion and the lack thereof

There was a time not so long ago when folks would actually dress up for day to day errands and outings.  The social norm was to wear hats, suits and gloves (for women).  Men were clean cut and conservative in their suits and hats. Women dare not go out of the house without their hair done and makeup on.

I always love that about old movies – everyone so prim and proper buzzing about and looking fabulous while doing it.  I was before my time, well any time that I would recall anyway.

Once I became an “adult” and started working for a living I had to adhere to dress codes.  I working in a salon so trendy was the ticket.  The one rule about makeup was that females had to wear lipstick, even if there was not another stroke of makeup on their face.
When going out on the town you wanted to be “dressed to kill” or “dressed to the 9s.”  The 80s were the time for BIG hair on girls and curls.  Nightclubs were a great place to get out and they catered to many types of guests.  You could be laid back or a dancing fool or even out on the prowl and have a good time.

But I digress; we are talking about fashion or more specifically the absence style in this day and age.  Nowadays nightclubs are little more than hollowed out warehouses with an unfinished floor, one bar and a dance floor that is used as a thoroughfare.  People wear T-shirts and tank tops with jeans and flip flops.  What the hell happened?

Here in 2011 it has become the okay to go out in your PJs to the store for an errand or even to spend the whole day out and about in your flannel pajama pants.

Just last night I was in Target shopping for Christmas and I caught a glimpse of a flannel print whisking by.  I had to get a better look.  Sure enough, two girls, and by girls I mean females of driving age, both in their PJs - full out PJs and furry slippers shopping in Target.  What has the world come to?  I shudder to think what the common wardrobe is in another forty years.
