Job Interviews
You know back in the day you would look for a job in the classified section of the newspaper. You would call the place and find out about the job and how to apply. Nowadays you get on the Internet and search free and paid web sites for work from a category, keyword and location.
This is all well and good and I love the Internet the ease of gaining information is amazing. What I have learned is that all kinds of bogus ads are posted with the name of the company withheld. Many posts have little or no information about the job so you don’t event know if you can do it, much less if you might like it.
What I do remember about getting an interview is that you show up, on time and dressed like you are not a bum. Maybe it is today’s twenty-something generation that is to blame.
But where and when I come from, you set a time and you show up, period. There are no confirmations from a potential employer to an interviewee via email or otherwise. With me if it is calendared it is set. And if you are interviewing with someone for a job you show up. If they want confirmation they call me I certainly do not call them if I am doing the hiring.
Now if something comes up and I am late or need to reschedule I would definitely call because that would just be plain rude.
Where in the world did this sense of entitlement come from? Was I this way when I was younger? Did I think everyone owed me something for no reason? God, I hope not. I do remember wanting things like the designer jeans all the other kids wore. And at seventeen supporting myself I wanted to make good money. But I did know I had to work for it. What ever happened to the work ethic?
