Littering and Such
You know it is funny how we, as a society, espouse on how important it is to be environmentally conscious and to “put litter in its place.” Yet every day I see folks tossing cigarette butts out of their car windows. I have even seen drivers throw out a fast food bag at the red light with all the food they just ate.
Now tell me what is going through these people’s heads…if anything. I hear tell that smokers believe that a cigarette butts are not litter. Gee, I wonder exactly how long it takes for a cigarette butt to decompose. (Okay, a quick search on the Internet sheds a little light on the subject. Cigarette filters never completely decompose after more than twelve years and what does break down takes 3-10 months.)
It is bad enough that our desire for an easier [disposable] life has landfills full of diapers and yard waste. Yes, I said yard waste. But for people to just throw stuff down and not even make an attempt at keeping it with all the other garbage is truly pitiful.
Let me tell you that I am no angel. I do use paper plates and bowls but at least they are paper and not Styrofoam. What is really sad is that when you do want to make an effort to buy recycled or reuseable items they cost a small fortune.
I know that we are all working on getting through this life. So, for once, let’s work together on making it better. Stop tossing garbage on the ground, even if no one is watching. Pick up a piece of litter left by someone else. Compost if you can. Hey now there is a new business idea, pick up other folks garbage and compost it and sell the soil to others at a affordable rate.
